Hasina arrested
Jul 16, 2007
It had to happen, but even then I am a bit surprised at the accelerated schedule. Looks like Minus-2 is nearing the end-game. And there is another message in this: question the DGFI at your own peril.
She will be jailed in the residence of the deputy-speaker of the parliament which has been declared a sub-jail.
No one should be above the law. I just wish the charge against her did not come from someone who was first arrested for corruption and then filed the case after being released. These "coincidences" taint the public perception.
Here is my question: is an extortion charge bailable, or not? If it is bailable, as an ex-PM and someone under 24x7 police guard, would bail have been appropriate? Should the magistrate have granted bail in that case?
Lastly, Joy has equated his mother's arrest to an attack on the independence of Bangladesh. Please. Sheikh Mujib's arrest in 1971 was an attack on the independence of Bangladesh (to be accurate, to prevent the independence). Hasina's arrest (on real or trumped-up charges) is at worst a CTG determined to get its way, at best, the law taking its own course. So enough with the hyperbole.
Now how about arresting the Jamaati thieves?
